Hardwood furniture, built one commission at a time.

Gowdy Timber & Co. is a small East Texas studio designing and hand-building heirloom dining tables, casegoods, and architectural millwork from responsibly sourced American hardwoods.

Serving Texas, Louisiana & Arkansas since 2011 Member — Texas Furniture Makers Guild
The Studio

A workshop where the wood tells us what to make.

Every commission starts on the shop floor with the boards themselves. We walk the racks with our clients, choose the slabs, and design around their grain and figure — not the other way around. The result is furniture that couldn't exist twice.

Leo Gowdy founded the studio in 2011 after ten years bench-training under a fourth-generation cabinetmaker in Nacogdoches. Today the shop is a two-bench operation on Gladwell Street in Longview, quietly turning out roughly forty commissions a year for clients across Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

What we build

Four things, done properly.

We deliberately keep the studio narrow. Fewer categories, more attention on each piece.

01

Heirloom dining tables

Trestle, pedestal and breadboard-end tables in white oak, walnut and pecan — sized to your room, joined with hand-cut mortises, finished in hardwax oil.

02

Casegoods & storage

Sideboards, hutches, media consoles, wardrobes and built-in bookcases. Solid wood, dovetailed drawers, wooden runners — never particleboard.

03

Architectural millwork

Mantels, staircases, kitchen islands, paneled libraries and interior doors, coordinated with your architect or designer from drawing through install.

04

Restoration

Careful repair and refinishing of pre-1950 American furniture. We reverse bad refinishes, replace missing veneer, and re-glue joinery with hide glue.

By the numbers

Fifteen years, one bench at a time.

A quiet studio does quiet work. Here is roughly what fifteen years of commissions add up to.

Leo built the walnut table our family will eat around for the next fifty years. He listened to what we actually wanted, then quietly made it better than we had asked for. — Marianne Kerr, Tyler, TX
Our architect specified a paneled library. Gowdy Timber delivered it on schedule, on budget, and installed clean. Rare combination. — Halloran & Vance Architects, Shreveport, LA
Materials

American hardwoods, sourced within a day's drive.

Every board that comes through the shop is FSC-eligible and traceable to a sawmill within roughly 300 miles of Longview.

White & red oak

Kiln-dried, quarter-sawn and rift-sawn, sourced from mills in East Texas and western Louisiana.

Black walnut & cherry

Wide, air-dried planks from a family sawyer in the Ozark foothills — the deep, unsteamed color you can't buy from big-box suppliers.

Native specialty woods

Mesquite, pecan, live-edge sycamore and hackberry — regional woods most makers won't touch, but that we love.
